When I go on vacation, I hate having to rent a car, especially overseas.

I love the UK because the train system is excellent, buses run on schedule, and the London tube is a snap.

Are there any other cities (anywhere in the WORLD) with an air-tight public transportation like that? Unless you're in a big city, I think the U.S. is sorely lacking! We don't even have buses in the city where I live!

    - Tokyo - the absolutely most extensive rail system I have ever seen. Nothing comes close. Nothing! - you will need a map for the stations alone.
--The Germans are known to be punctual and for good reason.
    - Hong Kong - clean , safe
    - Singapore - super clean, super safe
    - Shanghai - but so many darn people.
    - Santiago, Chile - very clean metro and safe, buses everywhere. Subways overcrowded now due to restructuring of transit system.
    - Buenos Aires - a little old but will get you there
    - New York - will get you there but sometimes delays, needs repair.
    - San Francisco - BART convenient, MUNI convenient
    - Seattle - Excellent bus system, no rail
    - Minneapolis - nice bus system, light rail from airport to downtown
    - Seville, Spain - nice new light rail system, buses, walkable. Must take a bus from the airport but it is cheap.
    - Istanbul - clean light rail and subway, extensive bus network
    - Paris, France - extensive rail network
    - Sydney - clean, safe
    - Rome. Italy - clean, conveniently located stations
    - Barcelona, Spain - clean, extensive
    - Madrid, Spain - clean, extensive, connects to airport
    - Lisbon, Spain - clean, fast, subway, Must take bus from airport but runs often. You will not think much of the trolleys in - San Francisco after seeing the trolleys in Lisbon, older, more charming and more character.
    - San Diego - the trolley is super convenient, clean and nice. buses run often. You must take a bus from the airport to downtown. Heck, I just walk to downown. It is that close.
    - Philadelphia - rail connects to the airport and downtown. Lots of buses serving the area including Jersey. Much cleaner than New Yorks.
    - Boston - Very nice system,
    - Washingtong DC - nice
    - Portland - light rail, looks nice. never used it.

Generally most European, Asian, South American, Australian cities have convenient transit systems. Perhaps Africa too Haven't been. The U.S. is the worst.

I have some photos of transit systems on my gallery and links to them on my blog.
