We are from small-town America....and are a bit intimidated, to say the least, about driving into the madness. What is best way (coming in from the Mojave/Vegas route) to get into L.A....we're looking for the Hollywood area, movie studio tours, see Beverly Hills etc. HELP.

I'm sorry to tell you there's going to be no way to miss the madness to get to Hollywood
 From I-15 you'll want to take 210 or I-10 west (cut over from 210 to I-10 via the 605 or some other road) and pick up US-101 east of downtown. That'll take you right into Hollywood. I would highly recommend a sightseeing tour bus if you have the time and inclination ... someone else drives, you get to look at stuff to your heart's content!

LA driving should not intimidate you. One thing LA has is wide roads and good traffic signs. The key is to plot your route before getting on the freeway and don't make last minute lane changes.
Unfortunately, there is not much to see between Las Vegas and LA but the desert. Take the 15 fwy from Vegas and Join the 210 fwy to Pasadena and then the 134 fwy to Burbank, Universal City and Hollywood. My recommendation as far as sightseeing is concerned is to book a tour. i live in la.it's 5 hrs. dude.and the route?you just drive straight all the way.well....sarcastically.well 1 hr later,you'll be seeing plains.yeah
