What is the average cost of living in New York?

I would prefer to be in Long Island, but if not, somewhere definitley close to the city.
We have a 2 year old so I'm looking for a place with a yard (to purchase).

Please give examples; how much an average salary is, how much the average home price in the area runs, cost of transportation, etc.

I'm not sure where you are coming from, but use this site as a tool:
    http://www.bankrate.com/brm/movecalc.asp?a=0&d1=105000&d2=129.393639929575&d3=98.5991377108134&rDirect=no

    As an example.
If you can live comfortably on $50,000 a year in Greenville, NC you would need a salary of $107,305 to have the same status of living in Manhattan, or $77,002 in Queens, or $77,142 on Long Island.

Average cost of a home with a yard, is in the neighborhood of 500,000.00 As far as average salaries, well that depends on what you do for a living. The cost is high, but the salaries arent much higher for similar work. So if you make 50 k a year, you may make a little more but thats about it.

I recently moved to NY. Taxes will eat you alive! Job pay does not increase much from the South where I came from. Cost of living, gas, utilities, deposit fees for recycling, etc. catches up quick. It's hard to find a decent house in a nice neighborhood with a yard from under $500, 000 as stated by someone else. Good luck with your move.
